Special Notes to Competitors

When making airline reservations, make sure the plane you are flying on will accommodate your boards.  Airbus planes and Boeing 737s and larger normally accommodate board bags.  Regional jets may not.  Make sure you know what the board bag charges are when you book your tickets.  Plan your flights carefully!! The ESA is not and will not be responsible for flights that do not accept board bags, luggage/board bag charges or any aspect of your flights including undelivered boards.

If you are flying into Aguadilla (airport code BQN) many incoming flights come in after midnight and many outgoing flights leave before dawn.  Plan accordingly.  If you are renting a vehicle, make sure the car rental agency will be open when you fly in (they may not open until the morning) and make sure you can drop off your vehicle when you arrive at the airport for your outgoing flight.

The San Juan airport (airport code SJU) is a good alternative to fly in and out of Puerto Rico.  It is a large full service airport.  All major US airlines except Southwest fly into SJU including Air Tran and Spirit.  Flights into SJU may be cheaper than flying into BQN and all major rental car agencies are at SJU.  The San Juan airport is about 2 ½ to 3 hours from Aquadilla, depending on traffic.

The images of the contest sites and the Aquadilla area are for reference purposes only!  Familiarize yourself with the area and your travel routes BEFORE you go.  Good resources are Google Earth and Google Maps.

Highway signs are in Spanish, not English.  Speed limits are in miles per hour but distances are in kilometers.  Fuel is sold by the liter, not the gallon.  There are approximately 4 liters to the gallon.

Passports are NOT required for direct nonstop flights between the US mainland and Puerto Rico and back.  If a flight from the US mainland to Puerto Rico or back has a scheduled stop in another country along the way (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for example), a passport may be required because of the stop in another country.  Check with your travel agent or airline when you book your flights.

We are guests of a proud island with a rich surfing heritage.  Respect the locals and the culture.  If you do, you will make lifelong friends!
