Remembering New Jersey's George Gerlach |
|
The East Coast lost an icon on January 20th with the passing of Ocean City, New Jersey's George Gerlach at age 76.
George was a mentor and much more to countless generations of New Jersey surfers, and his shop, Surfer's Supplies, founded in 1962, quickly became an epicenter for surfboard design, managing a blend of innovation and soulfulness that endures even today.
A longtime friend and supporter of the Eastern Surfing Association, the Ocean City Surfing Association and the United States Surfing Federation, George was also an active and accomplished competitor, holding numerous East Coast and national surfing titles over the years.
A member of the inaugural class of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame, George remained low-key and humble to the end. Anyone who didn't know George well would never have suspected he was a surf world heavyweight.
George's classic stories and presence will be missed from the south end of Ocean City to the south of France -- the Caribbean, California and the world over. Thanks for everything, George. |
